Lucca History Festival 2023
Nestled within the embrace of its storied walls, the city of Lucca boasts a rich tapestry of history that spans over two millennia. From the earliest Celtic-Ligurian settlers to the rise and fall of empires, Lucca’s timeline is etched with extraordinary events that have left an indelible mark on its identity. The Lucca History Fest, an immersive historical event, seeks to illuminate this captivating journey, employing the very walls that have stood witness to centuries of transformation as a unique temporal canvas. The festival’s narrative unfolds through nine strategically placed bulwarks, each serving as a portal to different eras that have defined the city. These historical reconstructions, brought to life with meticulous detail, offer a multidimensional experience. From the Celts and Etruscans to the Roman colony established in 180 BC, the festival eloquently traces Lucca’s evolution. The Lombard duchy, a pivotal chapter, is vividly portrayed at Baluardo San Donato. It was during this era that Lucca became the capital of the Duchy of Tuscia, under Lombard rule.
The ebb and flow of power continued as Charlemagne’s influence swept through Italy. The Franks took control in 774 AD, leading to the establishment of the Marquisate of Tuscia, with Lucca as its capital. The city’s prominence persisted until the Canossa family shifted the power center to Florence in 1056. However, Lucca’s journey towards autonomy was marked by resilience, culminating in its emergence as a free municipality in 1160.
The 14th century brought both strength and shadows. Under the leadership of Castruccio Castracani, Lucca flourished but also encountered foreign occupation. The subsequent quest for Libertas led to the reorganization of the city’s structure, forming the districts of San Paolino, San Salvatore, and San Martino.
